First Published: 4th April, 2025 22:17 IST

The funds being returned were for land acquisition related to the proposed railway project in Khasi Hills, including the Byrnihat–Shillong route

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today informed that the state government has initiated the process of returning funds to the Centre that were originally allocated for land acquisition related to the proposed railway project in Khasi Hills, including the Byrnihat–Shillong route.

The move comes in response to a recent communication from the Centre, requesting the return of money initially sanctioned for acquiring land for railway development in the region.

While confirming the development, the Chief Minister reiterated the state’s commitment to holding discussions on the future of rail connectivity in Meghalaya. An all-party committee is in the process of being constituted to examine the various aspects concerning the establishment of railway lines in Byrnihat, Shillong, and other parts of the state.

Chief Minister Sangma on Friday announced that the state government has officially formed an all-party committee to examine the longstanding demand for establishing a winter capital. The development follows a commitment he made on the floor of the Assembly, signaling the government’s seriousness in addressing regional aspirations and equitable governance.
