Meghalaya Government has decided to institute an independent inquiry to probe into the attack on social activist, Agnes Kharshiing and Amita Sangma.

The decision was taken after a Cabinet meeting was held last evening in capital Shillong.

Home Minster James Sangma said that the modalities of the independent committee would be worked out by the political department in consultation with the Law department.

Stating that the government wants to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the matter, he added that the independent inquiry would get to the genesis of the issue right from the year 2014 when the NGT first imposed a blanket ban on coal mining.

Earlier, the assembly panel on empowerment of women headed by Ampareen Lyngdoh on Monday called for an independent probe into the attack of Kharshiing and Amita.

Kharshiing, who is also the president of the Civil Society Women’s Organisation and her colleague Amita were brutally attacked by a group of people after the activist lodged a complaint on illegal mining and transportation of coal in the state on November 8 in East Jaintia Hills district.

On Thursday, one of the victims accused Nidamon Chullet, the working president of NPP East Jaintia Hills district as the mastermind of the attack. Chullet is now reportedly absconding.

After being questioned about the whereabouts of Nidamon Chullet, the Home Minister said that NPP would be meeting soon to discuss the matter and that the party affiliation of the accused did not matter.
