Meghalaya: Erratic power supply irks residents in Mawhati constituency, MLA meets Power Minister

According to Mawhati MLA Charles Marngar there are at least 7 villages under his constituency which are yet to be electrified despite Meghalaya attaining statehood 52 years ago.

Despite 52 years of Meghalaya attaining statehood, many villages in the state’s Mawhati constituency still continues to reel under darkness, as electricity is yet to reach those places.

There are at least 7 un-electrified villages in Mawhati – Makdoh, Muska, Amjong, Markhangduba, Amdubighat, Amphreng and Nongthymmai Makdoh. What adds more to the woes of the voters in Mawhati is the fact that even the electified areas are facing the issue of erratic power supply.

Unhappy with the sorry state of affairs, Congress MLA from Mawhati, Charles Marngar has drawn the Meghalaya Government’s attention to the matter.

Accordingly, the MLA submitted a letter to Power Minister AT Mondal seeking his intervention into the electrficiation of the villages. Besides, Charles Marngar also raised the issue of irregular power supply in a number of other villages under his constituency.

Highlighting the issue, Marngar said, “I have come to meet the Power Minister AT Mondal. The reason why I have come to meet the minister concerned is to inform him about the problems faced by my people in my constituency. The first point that I have already submitted to the minister is, I am very sad to inform the Power Minister that the problem faced by our people is the irregularity of power supply. We have around 4 areas- Mawhati, Sonidang, Umtrai and Umsiang, our people who live in those areas are facing a lot of problem. Especially the students who are preparing for their examinations.

Our people who started doing business, like an unemployed youth becoming a carpenter, who have already started their business, so how they will work without electricity? That is the main problem.

The second problem that we are facing is some of the villages in my constituency urgently needs electrification. Electricity poles, cables have already been set up in 2018-19 through the under Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (Phase-1). But it was de-electrified due to faulty lines. We have around 7 villages Makdoh, Muska, Amjong, Markhangduba, Amdubighat, Amphreng and Nongthymmai Makdoh, till today there is no electricity in those villages. I am very sad for that. There are more villages around these 7, which are yet to be electrified.

I am happy to inform you that the minister concerned has given me assurance to look into the matter. He said he will call the officers from the concerned department and immediately and seriously look into the matter.”

On the other hand, Meghalaya Power Minister AT Mondal said, “The MLA from Mawhati constituency met me along with some of the village elders. We discussed about the issue, he has given me a memorandum also. Very soon we will be discussing those issues and we will try to sort out the problem. If so, we will try to see that these villages are brought under electrification.”
