Meghalaya Dy CM S Dhar Holds Meet With AAI Officials to Discuss Umroi Airport Expansion

Deputy CM Dhar emphasized that before any development can proceed, specific guidelines need to be clarified and approved by the Union Government.
Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister and Transport Minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar, held a special meeting with senior officials of Airport Authority of India (AAI) on Monday to discuss the proposed expansion and improvement of the Umroi Airport.
The meeting that took place at the Airport was attended by local MLA Damanbaitbha Lamare, Meghalaya Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang, Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal, AAI Regional Executive Director M. Raja Kishore, and Umroi Airport Director Rajeev Ranjan, among others.
During a post-meeting briefing, Deputy Chief Minister Dhar outlined the main objectives, focusing on the requirements for the airport’s expansion. He emphasized that before any development can proceed, specific guidelines need to be clarified and approved by the Union Government. Once these guidelines are approved, the expansion plans can move forward.
Umroi Airport, was initially constructed in the mid-1960s and became operational in the mid-1970s. In June 2019, Umroi Airport received a Category 3C license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), allowing it to operate Q400 and ATR 72 aircraft. Following this, IndiGo began daily flights from Shillong to Kolkata on 20 July 2019 under the UDAN scheme, utilizing an ATR-72 aircraft. Airlines such as IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Alliance Air continue to operate flights from the airport, ensuring connectivity for the region.
