Meghalaya: Cong, VPP Demands Resignation of Dy CM Sniawbhalang Dhar Over Alleged HNLC Links

First Published: 8th May, 2025 20:05 IST

The party stated that Dhar should step down to ensure a fair and transparent investigation into the allegations.

Political pressure has intensified on Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, as both the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) and the Voice of the People Party (VPP) have demanded his immediate resignation following allegations of financial links to the banned militant group, the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC).

On Thursday, the MPCC raised concerns over reports suggesting that Dhar, a former Congress member, had financially supported the HNLC. The party stated that Dhar should step down to ensure a fair and transparent investigation into the allegations.

The VPP had earlier called for Dhar’s immediate removal from his position as Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Urban Affairs, pending the outcome of the investigation. The party cited a recent statement from the proscribed HNLC, which claimed that Dhar had secretly donated funds to the outfit during his tenure as a minister in the previous Congress-led government.
