Owner of the coal mine in Meghalaya’s West Khasi Hills wherein two labourers from Assam had died on February 16, surrendered before police yesterday, only to be released on bail immediately.

Alfred Rongrin, hailing from Umdang village, was arrested by Shallang Police under West Khasi Hills District on Sunday afternoon and released soon after as the accused had already secured bail papers before surrendering, sources said.

Rongrin had gone into hiding after the two labourers identified as Sukur Ali and Ainuddin Ali, from Boko in Assam, died in the abandoned mine where the duo had gone to conduct a survey.

The duo died due to a lack of oxygen in the abandoned coal mine at Shera in Langmar village near Shallang.
