Meghalaya CM Lays Foundation for Rs 15 Cr Seng Khasi Cultural Centre to Preserve Indigenous Heritage

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today laid the foundation stone for the Indigenous Cultural Centre of Seng Khasi Kmie at Mawkhar, Shillong, East Khasi Hills in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Minister for Art and Culture Paul Lyngdoh, community elders, and members of the Seng Khasi.
The centre, being constructed at a cost of Rs 15 crore, is envisioned as a living gateway to the Khasi heritage. It will serve as a space where traditions are not only displayed but actively practiced, passed on, and celebrated.
The initiative marks a significant step toward creating proper infrastructure for important indigenous rituals, many of which have been performed in open spaces for over a century. The centre represents a commitment to preserving the cultural significance and identity of the Khasi community for future generations.
The promotion and conservation of indigenous practices stand at the core of the project’s vision. The state government is also supporting this effort through the Chief Minister Research Fellowship (CMRF), encouraging research and documentation of traditions, beliefs, and history that have largely remained undocumented.
The cultural centre is expected to become a vital platform for learning and knowledge-sharing, where youth can engage with elders and scholars to understand the values, customs, and wisdom embedded in their heritage.
The project is rooted in a collaborative framework, conceptualised and envisioned by the community itself. It reflects the state’s larger cultural mission since 2018 to support, promote, preserve, and celebrate the diverse traditions of its people. The government’s inclusive approach aims to ensure that all communities in the state live in harmony while showcasing the richness of India’s cultural diversity.
