In a major development, Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP National President Conrad Sangma has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah advocating for ‘Gorkhaland’.

The Chief Minister asked the Centre not to forget that the Gorkhas too are rightful Indian citizens who deserve to have their own identity and homeland.

The letter from Conrad Sangma to the Union Home Minister was written on September 4 and its comes at a time when the NPP is looking to expand its base in North Bengal after having opened its unit there.

The Meghalaya Chief Minister flagged the issue by saying that separate State of Gorkhaland is a long pending constitutional demand of the Gorkhas.

Conrad Sangma in his letter also highlighted the contributions of several noted Gorkha personalites while stating that the Gorkhas have contributed immensely to the fabric of Indian society and are rightful Indian citizens who deserve to have their own identity and home land.

Sangma has requested the Centre to offer an honourable and lasting political solution to the Gorkhas.

The letter has been made public by the NPP, a constituent partner of the NDA, at a time when the monsoon session of Parliament is in progress and there has been a growing demand by the NDA allies in Darjeeling for finding a permanent political solution.

Notably, Conrad Sangma happens to be the second chief minister to lend support to the Gorkhaland demand.

Earlier in 2011, Pawan Chamling, the then Sikkim chief minister had got a resolution adopted in the State Assembly terming Gorkhaland as a genuine and legitimate demand of the people of the hills.
