Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Friday said he was hopeful of making progress towards finding a permanent solution to the long-pending Meghalaya-Assam border dispute.
Speaking to newspersons, CM Conrad Sangma said that so far a few leaders like AL Hek from the state had called upon the newly appointed CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to congratulate him but those cannot be termed as official meeting. However, he said that official meeting and communication at the Chief Ministerial level would be held soon.
Sangma also said that he has spent more time studying about the border issue in the last couple of months than any other issue. He added that the government will try to find an amicable solution to this problem.
Furthermore, he said the Meghalaya government is hopeful that the long-pending boundary row would finally be resolved with the new leadership in Assam.
Meanwhile, Conrad Sangma confirmed Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s crucial two-day visit to Shillong on July 17, during which he is likely to take up the matter of inter-state border dispute. During the visit, Shah is also expected to inaugurate the ISBT besides a few other projects.
He also informed that Shah will chair a meeting with Chief Ministers, DGPs and chief secretaries of all Northeast states during the visit.
The Union Home Minister has expressed his desire that interstate issues among states in India be resolved before 75th anniversary of India’s Independence on August 15, Sangma further added.
