Classes for the Arts stream would start first. Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam Sangma said that Science and Commerce stream classes will start a little later
In a further boost to the education sector in Meghalaya, classes in 2 new degree colleges – Patharkhmah Degree College in Ri Bhoi district and Rongjeng Degree College in East Garo Hills district are all set to begin from this academic session.
“This year the Arts department has decided (to start classes in the colleges) since the building of both the degree colleges are almost completed. Of course some work is pending like water connection, construction of approach road. But since the buildings are completed, we are going ahead with making the colleges operational and fully functional from this academic session,” Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma said.
Sangma also spoke about the recruitments to be made for the college management and informed, “We are appointing the Principal in-charge immediately and after the MCC (Model Code of Conduct due to Lok Sabha elections) is lifted we will recruit all the necessary staff already sanctioned. For the newly sanctioned posts, including the Principal, we will make fresh recruitments with the already approved departmental selection recruitment board.”
Rakkam A Sangma also said that the other streams- Science and Commerce will also come up in the colleges in due course of time deemed mandatory as per the National Education Policy (NEP).
“For this academic session we will start with some departments from the Arts stream only. In the near future we will look at starting other streams also. As per the NEP 2020 we have to start all the departments, but that will take some time,” Sangma further said.
