the Centre has sanctioned Rs 100 crore for the implementation of Meghalaya's Tura Bulk Water Supply Scheme

In a significant step towards helping the people of Tura, Meghalaya in resolving their acute shortage of water, the Centre has sanctioned Rs 100 crore for the implementation of Tura Bulk Water Supply Scheme, said Minister in-charge of Public Health Engineering Marcuise N. Marak.

The Tura Bulk Water Supply Scheme was approved by the Centre under the Northeast Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS) recently at a meeting held between the officials of the Government of India and Government of Meghalaya.

Centre approved the project after the Tura Water Supply Scheme was affected in September of this year by the drying up of water sources.

Minister Marak said that the implementation of the project will help address the shortage of water supply faced by people in Tura town.

He said that after going through all procedures, a tender will be floated to ensure work starts immediately.

“We are proposing to create a reservoir that will be available for irrigation, eco-tourism, and other uses,” said Minister Marak.

Minister Marak said that these reservoirs are necessary to support fire tenders during emergencies.

People of Tora have been struggling with shortage of water, especially during the drier season.

Many people are also forced to drive to the nearby rivers and streams to do their laundry.
