Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma will discuss border issues and seek additional projects for the development of border areas during his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on September 9.

He is expected to meet Home Minister Shah on the sidelines of the GST Council meeting in the national capital.

“I will be going to Delhi for the GST Council meeting on September 9. During this visit of mine for the GSTC meeting, I will once again be meeting the home minister and I will be stressing on the need to strengthen and re-sanction and reallot more projects for the border area development”, CM added.

He mentioned that a memorandum has been finalized, and the government is moving forward with the proposal.

Sangma further said, “It is not about just sealing the borders, it is about economically strengthening our borders, infrastructures, and overall facilities for the people living in the border areas.”

Speaking to media, Conrad said, “I have got a categorical reply and message from him that nobody will be allowed to enter our borders. One and two incidents here and there are different issues but we are not going to see any kind of a formal large-scale immigration or movement of people from Bangladesh coming in”.

Sangma expressed optimism about the situation, noting that while it is not yet fully stable, there has been some improvement, particularly with the normalization of trade in the border areas. However, he emphasized the need for continued vigilance.

Regarding the issue of unfenced borders, Sangma acknowledged the state’s awareness of the challenges posed by the approximately 40-50 kilometres of the international border that remain unfenced.

He noted that following the recent unrest, the state government held a series of meetings with the BSF, Army, and Meghalaya Police to address these concerns. The focus was particularly on the critical areas from border pillars 1250 to 1350, where fencing is still pending.

Meghalaya shares a border length of 443 kilometers with Bangladesh, of which around 50km is unfenced.
