The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Monday ratified the Constitution (126th Amendment) Bill, 2019 pertaining to the extension of reservation of seats for the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma moved the resolution for the ratification of the (126th Amendment) Bill during the assembly session.
Leader of the Opposition Congress, Dr Mukul Sangma raised the possibility of extending the reservation for a period of 10 years. In reply to this, Chief Minister Sangma said that since 1960 until now, the extension of seats is done every 10 years and is a practice.
Both the houses of the Parliament had passed the resolution in December 2019 and forwarded to the State legislatures for ratification, before the bill is placed for assent of the President of India.
