Thomas A Sangma, Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, chaired a review meeting on Thursday to assess the ongoing construction of the new Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang. Joined by Dr. Andrew Simons, Commissioner & Secretary of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, along with officials from various departments and the Assembly Secretariat, the inspection focused on the project’s progress and ensuring its timely completion.
The Speaker expressed overall satisfaction, noting that while work had been slow at times, the project was advancing steadily. He emphasized the importance of integrating the building with its natural surroundings and called on the Forest and Horticulture Departments to enhance greenery around the complex to restore the area’s natural environment.
Discussions also centered on the interior design of the building. The Arts and Culture Department was tasked with showcasing the story of Meghalaya in the reception area and illustrating the history of the Legislative Assembly throughout the hallways and corridors.
Addressing earlier concerns over labour shortages, the Speaker confirmed that the workforce had increased, with skilled workers arriving to manage specialized tasks, including the construction of the dome sphere over the main assembly hall. Full-scale work is expected to commence soon.
Though the project was initially slated for completion by 30 September 2024, the Speaker indicated that the timeline may extend by another month to ensure both quality and safety. He praised the collaboration between departments, particularly the PWD’s building division, for their commitment to the project’s safety and progress.
