Meet Kashish Chaudhary, First Hindu Woman Appointed Assistant Commissioner in Balochistan

Kashish Chaudhary secured the post after successfully clearing the Balochistan Public Service Commission (BPSC) examination.
In a landmark moment for Pakistan’s minority communities, Kashish Chaudhary, a 25-year-old Hindu woman, has made history by becoming the first female from the Hindu minority to be appointed as an Assistant Commissioner in Balochistan, reports First Post.
Her appointment is being hailed as a significant breakthrough in a province known for its conservative societal norms and limited minority representation in governance.
Who is Kashish Chaudhary?
Chaudhary secured the post after successfully clearing the Balochistan Public Service Commission (BPSC) examination. Hailing from Noshki, a remote town in Chagai district, her achievement is being celebrated as a beacon of hope and inspiration for both women and minority communities across Pakistan.
On Monday, Kashish and her father, Girdhari Lal, travelled to Quetta, where they were warmly received by Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti. During the meeting, she shared her vision of working towards the upliftment of women, supporting minority groups, and contributing to the overall development of the province.
“It is a matter of great pride for me that my daughter has become an Assistant Commissioner through her hard work and commitment,” said Lal, who works as a mid-level trader. He added that Kashish had always been passionate about education and had aspired from a young age to serve her community.
Chief Minister Bugti lauded Kashish’s success, calling it a proud moment for the province and the nation. “Kashish is a symbol of pride for Balochistan and Pakistan,” he remarked, emphasising the value of inclusivity and equal opportunity in public service.
In an interview with SAMAA TV, Kashish shared that she dedicated three years to preparing for the BPSC exam, studying up to eight hours a day. “Discipline, hard work, and the desire to contribute to society have driven me throughout this journey,” she stated.
Her appointment adds to the growing list of trailblazing Hindu women in Pakistan who are making their mark in traditionally male-dominated professions. These women have defied socio-cultural norms, broken through barriers, and demonstrated resilience in the face of challenges.
Among them is Manisha Ropeta, who, in July 2022, became the first Hindu woman to be appointed as Superintendent of Police in Karachi. Similarly, Pushpa Kumari Kohli serves as a sub-inspector in Karachi and has encouraged other Hindu girls to pursue education and dream big.
“There are many more Hindu girls out there waiting to educate themselves and become something,” Kohli said, adding that she, too, cleared the Sindh Police Public Services Examination.
Another inspirational figure is Suman Pawan Bodani, who continues to serve as a civil judge in Hyderabad, having been appointed in her hometown of Shahdadkot in 2019.
Sindh politician Ramesh Kumar Vankwani has been a vocal advocate for improving access to education among Hindu girls.
“Our young women are doing us proud. We have doctors, civil servants, and police officers in Sindh,” he said.
He also highlighted ongoing concerns such as abduction and forced conversions, stressing that expanding educational opportunities is key to addressing such issues.
Hindus constitute the largest religious minority in Pakistan. While official figures place their population at approximately 7.5 million, community estimates suggest the number exceeds 9 million, with the vast majority residing in Sindh province.
Kashish Chaudhary’s achievement stands as a testament to the transformative power of education and determination. Her success not only marks a personal milestone but also symbolises a hopeful shift towards greater inclusivity and representation for Pakistan’s minority communities.
