It is now confirmed that a well-organised land-grabbing racket has been operating in Guwahati with land sharks working in connivance with some officials of the state revenue department, brokers and lawyers.
This was revealed today by Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah after the police and revenue officials unearthed this massive land-grabbing racket.
Speaking to Northeast Live, Police Commissioner Diganta Barah said, “In Guwahati, especially in the police department, we receive numerous complaints related to land disputes. In some cases, we observed potential forgery, where fake documents were prepared, possibly by land mafias in collaboration with government officers, officials, advocates, and advocate clerks.”
Barah highlighted that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was briefed about the matter, leading to the initiation of a joint investigation by the district revenue administration and the police.
During the ongoing investigation, it was discovered that a racket was involved in creating fraudulent land sale documents. The criminals forged documents in someone’s name, obscuring the actual landowner. They manipulated official records, particularly focusing on years before 1998 when land records were not computerized. Once the entry was made, the so-called land sale deed would be lost, and the group applied for a certified copy.
Barah outlined the land mafias, stating, “The gang of land grabbers mutates the land into someone else’s name, leaving the original owner unaware of the process.”
Three individuals have been arrested so far, including a computer operator from the Revenue Circle Office in Dispur, a junior assistant from the Sub Registrar Office in Guwahati, a land broker, and an advocate.
“This is the tip of the iceberg, and the investigation will be prolonged,” added Barah
