Mass Cheating Racket Using Electronic Devices Busted in Itanagar, 53 Booked

The incident came to light during the CBSE-conducted recruitment exam for non-teaching posts under Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti.

In a major crackdown, the Itanagar Capital Police on Sunday busted a mass cheating racket involving sophisticated electronic devices during a national-level recruitment exam.

SP Rohit Rajbir Singh, in a press briefing today, revealed that the cheating operation was orchestrated by a group with links to Jind, Haryana.

He also hinted at the possibility of a paper leak, suggesting a larger pre-planned cheating network operating across India.

The incident came to light during the CBSE-conducted recruitment exam for non-teaching posts under Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti.

The posts included Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA) and Lab Attendant (LA), with exam centers located at VKV Chimpu and Kingcup Public School in Itanagar.

Police discovered unidentified electronic devices, including miniature earpieces. A total of 29 such devices were seized, raising alarm about the scale and technological sophistication of the operation.

According to SP Singh, the masterminds specifically targeted remote exam locations and lower-profile exams where surveillance measures such as jammers are less likely to be deployed. He further stated that similar suspicious activities have been reported at other centers in Dimapur, Sikkim, and Dehradun—all of which are now under active investigation.

The case has been registered against 53 individuals under the newly introduced Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Information Technology (IT) Act, and the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024.

The police are now working with inter-state counterparts to trace the wider network behind the operation. Investigations are also focused on potential inside help and paper leak links.

This development raises serious concerns about the integrity of national-level competitive examinations and the urgent need for enhanced digital surveillance and preventive measures at examination centers.
