First Published: 15th June, 2023 15:43 IST

Sensation prevails in the new Checkon area of Imphal East after a house was set on fire.

Fire and emergency services personnel rushed to the spot soon after the news of the incident came in. New Checkon is an area with a mixed population of Meiteis, Kukis, Nagas, and Manipuri Muslims, or the Pangal community. Tension has been running high in the area following the violence in Khamenlok, where at least 13 people died. The house was set on fire at around 1 pm today. As per inputs, as fire service personnel and security forces rushed to the spot, locals gathered at the spot and had an argument with the forces. As the situation started to turn volatile, the forces had to resort to tear gas shelling to disperse the crowd.
