Manipur Unrest: 1 Protestor Killed, Over 40 Injured During Clashes With Security Forces In Kangpokpi District

At least 1 protestor died and over 40 were injured following clashes with security forces in Kangpokpi district on Saturday. The clashes took place after protestors belonging to the Kuki-Zo community took to the streets of the hill district to stop the Manipur State Transport bus that was on its way from the Imphal valley to Kangpokpi as part of the Union Government’s initiative to start free movement of goods and people across the trouble-torn state.
According to reports the deceased had sustained bullet injuries at Keithelmanbi.
Over 30 protestors were injured at Gamgiphai and another 15 others were injured at Keithelmanbi. As per reports one has been referred to Guwahati for cornea damage.
The MST bus was initially blocked at Gamgiphai but security personnel managed to ensure that the bus crossed Gamgiphai. However, at Keithelmanbi Military Colony, just 5 kilometers away from Kangpokpi District Headquarters, large number of Kuki-Zo people blocked the MST Bus and the convoy escorting the bus.
Protestors also hurled huge stones and concrete blocks as they tried to stop the MST bus from entering the district. A BSF vehicle which was proceeding towards Imphal was also set ablaze.
It may be mentioned that the first state transport bus was flagged off from the Imphal airport for Senapati via Kangpokpi. CAPF escort was provided to the bus which had two passengers and the driver.
