Manipur Resumes Intra-State Bus Service Amid Crisis with CAPF Escort
First Published: 8th March, 2025 12:05 IST
This decisive action follows a high-level meeting chaired by Amit Shah on March 1, when he directed officials to restore free movement.
The state government launched bus services from Imphal to several districts to restore free movement across Manipur. The first state transport bus for Senapati was flagged off from Imphal Airport, while another bus bound for Churachandpur departed from the same terminal.
Both buses are operating under CAPF escort. Security personnel are accompanying the buses along key routes to guarantee a safe journey. Each bus is carrying only about two passengers along with the driver.
Manipur Chief Secretary PK Singh confirmed on Friday that the buses will run on multiple routes, including Imphal–Kangpokpi–Senapati and Imphal–Bishnupur–Churachandpur. The Imphal West Superintendent of Police personally escorted the Senapati bus until it reached the Kangpokpi border.
Since May 3, 2023, violent clashes between the Meetei and Kuki communities have disrupted normal bus services in the region. The crisis, which has claimed more than 250 lives and displaced around 60,000 people, forced many services to halt. In response, the state government arranged these bus services under strict security measures to facilitate essential travel and maintain connectivity during these challenging times.
The Chief Secretary’s office issued a stern warning against any attempts to disrupt the newly resumed transportation services. This decisive action follows a high-level meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on March 1, when he directed officials to restore free movement across Manipur. Despite opposition from several Kuki-Zo groups demanding separate administration, authorities have maintained enhanced security protocols to ensure smooth and safe operations.
