Manipur Observes 85th Nupi Lal Day
The 85th Nupilal Day was observed in Manipur, commemorating the historic women’s uprising of 1939 against the unregulated export of rice that led to a severe famine in the state. 33rd State-Level Nupilal Ningsing Lamjel, a commemorative race was also organised that witnessed enthusiastic participation from women across various communities of the state. Nupilal Day pays homage to the brave women of Manipur who stood united against British policies that exacerbated food scarcity. The movement began as a protest against foreign merchants exporting rice from Manipur, leaving local residents to face famine-like conditions.
