First Published: 18th January, 2025 21:03 IST

First elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2022, he was one of six NPP lawmakers in the Manipur Legislative Assembly.

N. Kayisii, Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Manipur, passed away on Saturday at the age of 58. The two-time MLA breathed his last at his official residence in Imphal after battling stomach cancer for over a year.

Representing the Tadubi Assembly constituency in Senapati district, Kayisii was a prominent leader of the National People’s Party (NPP). First elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2022, he was one of six NPP lawmakers in the Manipur Legislative Assembly. In March 2021, he was appointed as the state president of the NPP under the leadership of Conrad Sangma.

Kayisii’s political career included a significant tenure as the Minister for Tribal and Hill Areas and Fisheries in the N. Biren Singh-led government from 2017 to 2020. While the NPP initially supported Biren Singh’s second term, the party withdrew its support in November 2024 amid political tensions in the state.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, former Deputy Chief Minister and NPP National Vice President Y. Joykumar, and numerous Ministers and political colleagues visited Kayisii’s residence to pay their respects and extend their condolences to the bereaved family. NPP Chief Conrad Sangma also shares his grief over Kayisii’s untimely death.
