The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has made a landmark decision to approve 50 National Highway projects in Manipur, encompassing a total length of 1,026 kilometers. Among these, 44 projects, spanning 902 kilometres, are specifically aimed at improving infrastructure in the hilly regions of the state, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing connectivity in challenging terrains.

So far, eight of these projects, totalling 125 kilometres, have been completed in the hilly areas. Currently, 36 projects are underway, with an impressive budget allocation of Rs 12,000 crore for the remaining 777 kilometers. These infrastructure developments are expected to significantly boost connectivity and accessibility, fostering economic growth and improving the quality of life for residents in these regions.

Looking ahead, the Ministry has earmarked two additional National Highway projects worth Rs 1,350 crore for the 2024-25 Annual Plan, focusing on an additional 90 kilometers in hilly areas. This continued investment reflects a sustained commitment to infrastructure development in Manipur.

In addition to these highway projects, the Ministry is also prioritizing improvements to state roads. Under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF), the Ministry has approved 57 out of 111 proposed works submitted by the state government, emphasizing a responsive approach to local needs. Notably, the Balance of Supply (BoS) ratio for these approved works has increased to 9.81, surpassing the permissible ratio of four for hilly states. This adjustment highlights the Ministry’s focus on balancing infrastructure development with sustainable practices.

Overall, these initiatives signal a proactive approach to enhancing road infrastructure in Manipur, particularly in its hilly regions, paving the way for improved economic opportunities and better connectivity for local communities.
