Manipur: HM Amit Shah’s visit evokes hopes of peace and harmony, state fast moving towards normalcy

The Home Minister got down to work the minute he landed in state capital Imphal and dashed straight to the Manipur Secretariat

After camping in trouble-torn Manipur for three days since May 29, meeting various key stakeholders and visiting the most violence-hit areas of the state in a bid to bring back peace and normalcy in the northeastern state that has been on the boil since May 3, Union Home Minister Amit Shah played the role of a ‘Peace Emissiary’ to pacify the volatile situation, one of the worst in the state’s history in recent times.

The Home Minister got down to work the minute he landed in state capital Imphal and dashed straight to the Manipur Secretariat where he held a crucial meeting with Chief Minister N Biren Singh and the Council of Ministers.

Five key decisions were taken at the meeting that went on from little past 9.30 PM till close to 11 PM. HM Shah had landed at 9.15 PM.

The 5 key decisions taken are:
⦁ Restore normalcy and bring peace
⦁ Take necessary action to improve law-and-order situation in the state
⦁ Expedite relief measures and make essential items available to common people
⦁ Compensation of Rs 10 lakh to each of the deceased and a job to next of kin
⦁ BSNL telephone lines to be installed to dispel rumours

The next day, May 30, saw some very crucial meetings as Amit Shah held deliberations with the Imas or the very influential women leaders who run the Ima Keithal or Ima market in Imphal over breakfast at the Raj Bhawan followed by a meeting with diffferent Civil Society Organisations including the COCOMI.

After that, the same day the Union Home Minister left for Churachandpur, the district from where the violence had started and one of the worst affected parts of the state where he spoke to different CSOs and intellectuals as part of efforts to pacify the tempers that was running high.

The same day Home Minister Amit Shah also held an all party meeting wherein representatives of 7 political parties were present.

On May 31, Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited affected places in Kangpokpi and the border town of Moreh along the India-Myanmar border and reviewed the situation. Shah first interacted with civil society organizations and Kuki leaders in Kangpokpi.

The meeting held at the 22 Assam Rifles camp was attended by Kuki Inpi Manipur Monitoring Cell, Kuki Women Union, Sadar Hills led by Committee on Tribal Unity or COTU.

Amit Shah also visited different relief camps in Kangpokpi and Imphal East and interacted with the inmates there. Home Minister also spoke to some affected people at the Raj Bhawan who are taking shelther in various shelter camps in the Imphal valley

After returning to Imphal, the Union Home Minister reviewed the security situation on day 31 of Manipur violence.
