Manipur govt confers MC Mary Kom with ‘Meethoi Leima’ title

The Manipur government conferred 6-times World Women Boxing Champion MC Mary Kom with the title of ‘Meethoi Leima’ during a felicitation ceremony held at Kuman Lampak sports complex on Tuesday.

The Star pugilist was also awarded a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh rupees for bringing laurels to the nation following her astounding feat of bagging gold at AIBA World Women Boxing Championship 2018 held recently.

Lauding Mary Kom for her achievement, CM Biren Singh asserted that Kombirei road, a 2.9 km long road connecting Game Village to Lamphel district council will be renamed after Mary Kom.

The Manipur Chief Minister expressed pride that the state is regarded as a sports capital city by the President himself.

He also expressed pride on the coming up of the national sports university in view of the contribution of the state players to the sporting world.

It may be mentioned that the foundation stone of the same has already been laid. The Deputy CM, cabinet ministers and MLAs also were in attendance at the ceremony.

Meanwhile, during the event Mary Kom promised to bring more laurels to the nation in the upcoming 2022 Tokyo Olympics and appeal to the public to support her.
