Security personnel at the checkpoint reportedly asked to cover the word 'Manipur' written on the windshield of the MSRTC bus with tape and paper.

Governor of Manipur Ajay Bhalla today announced the setting up of a 2-member inquiry committee to probe the facts and circumstances around the incident involving security personnel and the Manipur State Transport bus carrying a group of media persons who were on way to Ukhrul to cover the Shirui Lily Festival.

The members of the committee are N Ashok Kumar, Commissioner, Home, Government of Manipur and Kirankumar Singh, Secretary, IT, Government of Manipur. The committee will submit its report within 15 days, the order said.

The Manipur State Transport (MST) bus hired by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, state government department, was carrying journalists from Imphal to Ukhrul when the bus was stopped near the Gwalatabi checkpoint in Imphal East district on May 20.

Security personnel at the checkpoint reportedly asked to cover the word ‘Manipur’ written on the windshield of the MSRTC bus with tape and paper.

The journalists objected to the act, demanding to know why the name of the state should be hidden on a government bus. In protest, they turned back midway and returned to Imphal, refusing to continue their journey.

The committee has been instructed to identify any lapses on the part of the security forces and recommend preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future. It has been asked to submit its findings within 15 days.
