Manipur Floods Displace Over 3,800 People, Damage 883 Homes, Rescue Ops Intensify

Severe flooding triggered by relentless rainfall has thrown life out of gear across Manipur, with over 3,800 people affected and 883 houses damaged, according to the latest situation report by the Relief and Disaster Management Authority of Manipur released on May 31. Within just 24 hours, the disaster impacted as many as 3,275 localities, communities, and villages.
Authorities confirmed that more than 720 people have been evacuated to safer locations. Two individuals sustained injuries, while the floods also led to the death of 64 animals. Landslides occurred at 12 different locations, adding to the scale of destruction.
Rescue and relief efforts are in full swing. The state has opened six relief camps and two medical relief camps to assist the displaced population. Officials are distributing food, clean drinking water, and other emergency supplies across the affected areas.
Floodwaters have damaged infrastructure at 11 locations, and reports confirm a crop loss across 0.2 hectares of farmland. The damage has further disrupted the lives of hundreds of families already reeling under the ongoing crisis.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force have joined hands with the State Disaster Response Force, police, fire services, and rescue boat teams to manage the situation on war footing.
A high-level team of senior officers from the Home Department, Police, and Relief and Disaster Management conducted an aerial inspection of the flood-affected areas in Imphal East district on May 31. The team used a helicopter to survey the most severely hit zones and assess the extent of damage and the urgent needs of the affected people.
Government agencies are working closely with each other to provide timely relief and ensure rehabilitation. They have prioritised essential services such as drinking water supply, sanitation, healthcare, and emergency shelter for the displaced families.
