Loktak Lake is regarded as among the most beautiful and ecologically diverse lakes in the Northeast.
Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday lauded the Loktak Development Authority (LDA) and the State Fishery Department for cleaning Loktak Lake, which plays an important role in restoring the ecology and for the sustainability of fisheries.
Taking to X (Formerly known as Twitter), Singh said, “I’m pleased to inform you that the cleaning initiative of Loktak Lake commenced on 28th November, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Loktak Development Authority and the State Fishery Department.”
“Machineries have been deployed, and necessary funds provided to ensure the success of this critical endeavour. Seeing the happiness and relief among our local people brings immense joy to my heart. This initiative is not just about cleaning the water; it’s a step towards restoring the lake’s ecology, vital for the sustainability of our fisheries,” he added.
“Your resilience and community spirit have been inspiring. Together, we are working towards a healthier and more sustainable environment. I thank you for your patience and cooperation throughout this process”, Singh further added.
Loktak Lake is regarded as among the most beautiful and ecologically diverse lakes in the Northeast.
Recently, the state government has expressed its reservations to the Centre over a hydro-electric modernisation plan in the state’s famous Loktak Lake saying it could be detrimental to the endangered species of Sangai deer apart from disturbing the biodiversity of the lake. It has also said it was not consulted before a detailed project report (DPR) was prepared.
A meeting in this regard was held by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest in the national capital with Loktak Development Authority (LDA) chairman M Asnikumar Singh among other state officials expressing the Manipur government’s concerns over the project.
LDA chairman strongly suggested that the modernisation plan of the Loktak Hydel Project is revisited before its execution to avoid further adverse impact.
