Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh is returning to Imphal from New Delhi today, accompanied by BJP’s Northeast coordinator and national spokesperson Sambit Patra. His return follows a crucial meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the national capital earlier today.
CM Biren Singh had flown to Delhi on Saturday, reportedly to discuss key issues with the Union leadership. He made the trip without any of his cabinet colleagues, signalling the growing political turbulence within the ruling BJP in Manipur.
Before his departure for Delhi, the Chief Minister had convened a meeting at the CM’s Secretariat with all BJP and alliance MLAs, officially to discuss the upcoming budget session. However, sources indicate that the real purpose of the meeting was to assess the level of support for Biren Singh among party legislators. A total of 21 MLAs were reportedly present during the discussions.
Meanwhile, a separate meeting was allegedly held at an undisclosed location on Saturday, attended by BJP MLAs unhappy with Biren Singh’s leadership. Another round of discussions among dissenting MLAs reportedly took place on Sunday at the BJP office, reflecting deepening internal divisions within the party.
On Wednesday night, a group of seven BJP MLAs, including senior Minister Thongam Biswajit, Minister Govindas Konthoujam, Minister L. Susindro, MLA S. Kunjakeshor, MLA Kh. Ibomcha, MLA Premchandra, and MLA Karam Shyam, departed from Imphal on a late-night charter flight at 8:50 PM.
Amidst the unfolding crisis, Manipur Congress president Keisham Meghachandra has announced his intention to move a no-confidence motion against the BJP government in the upcoming budget session, further intensifying the state’s political scenario.
As CM Biren Singh returns to Imphal today, all eyes are on the next developments in Manipur’s political landscape.
