Manipur Chief Justice MV Muralidaran transferred within 2 days

First Published: 19th October, 2023 10:15 IST

The development comes 2 days after Justice MV Muralidaran was appointed as the Chief Justice of Manipur High Court

Two days after being appointed as the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, Justice MV Muralidaran has been transferred to the Calcutta High Court.

Justice Muralidaran on October 10 had requested the Supreme Court collegium to transfer him to his parent High Court of Madras and if that was not feasible, to permit him to continue to function in the Manipur High Court, instead of transferring him to the Calcutta HC.

However, the SC collegium in a resolution stated, “The collegium does not find merit in the requests made by him. The collegium, therefore, resolves to reiterate its recommendation dated 9 October 2023, to transfer Muralidaran to the High Court at Calcutta.”

Justice Muralidaran’s order in March to consider including the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list had triggered protests in Manipur that led to protests and eventually clashes between 2 communities and is still in turmoil for the fifth month now.

In a post on X, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal confirmed about the development.
