Manipur And Tripura MPs Demand AIIMS In Their Respective States

First Published: 3rd August, 2024 14:33 IST

Manipur LS MP Bimol Akoijam raised the issue in Parliament and urged Centre to upgrade RIMS to AIIMS.

Manipur Lok Sabha MP Bimol Akoijam and Tripura Lok Sabha MP Kriti Debi Debbarman on Friday urged upon the Centre to establish AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) in their respective states. The MPs raised the issue during the Monsoon Session of Parliament in New Delhi.

The Congress MP from Inner Manipur parliamentary constituency, Akoijam has urged the Centre to upgrade the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in the state to the status of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

During the session, the Congress MP highlighted the crucial role RIMS has been playing in the region’s healthcare space.

He said that the 52-year-old institution medical institute has the potential to make substantial contributions to the healthcare sector if recognized as an institute of national importance.

He also pointed out that the medical institute caters to patients from neighbouring states as well as international patients from countries like Myanmar. He stressed that upgrading RIMS to an AIIMS would significantly enhance the region’s healthcare infrastructure and contribute to the state’s economic development.

He also batted for setting up a mental health institute in Manipur. He urged the union health minister to establish a centrally-run mental health hospital and institute in the state to address challenges which has been affected by conflict and urbanization.

Tripura East Lok Sabha MP Kriti Devi Debbarman has written a letter to Union health Minister JP Nadda urging him for establishing an AIIMS like Medical College & Hospital in Tripura Tribal Areas and Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

In her letter, the MP stated, “The residents of TTAADC are currently facing a critical gap in advanced healthcare services and medical education in the area, and hence, they require an AIIMS-like Medical College Hospital to address the issue.”

“The State Government of Tripura had previously submitted a proposal under the centrally sponsored scheme (CSS) to your ministry. This proposal includes the establishment of a 100 bedded new medical college hospital attached to the Dhalai district hospital,” the letter reads.

MP Kriti Debi Debbarman further stated on her letter that the local district administration has already identified suitable land for this project. Specifically, there are 10 acres of land adjacent to the existing district hospital in Dhalai district at Ambassa and 14 acres in the adjacent Lalchari area, she added.
She stated, “Given the urgency and importance of this project, I kindly request that your ministry prioritize and expedite the review and approval process. The establishment of this AIIMS-like Medical College Hospital would serve as a critical milestone in bridging the healthcare gap in our tribal areas and providing much-needed medical services and educational opportunities.”

Founder of TIPRA Motha and MP Kriti Debi Debbarman’s brother Pradyot Bikram Manikya DebBarma stated, “Our MP has raised the demand for an AIIMS in the State and that too in an area which is affected by most hardship and disease. This will not only benefit our state but can also cater to people from Mizoram and Silchar.”

“In our forthcoming talks on the Tiprasa Accord we too have demanded the same. If we work as a Team we can achieve more. Now awaiting the response from the Centre,” he added.

So far Assam is the only state in the northeast that has an AIIMS which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 14, 2023. It is located at Changsari near Guwahati.
