Manipur: 3-day long traditional plantation festival ‘Paoki’ ends in Senapati district

The 3-days long traditional paddy cultivation festival called ‘Paoki’ held from May 9 to May 11 ended on Friday at Purul village in Senapati district, Manipur. The festival was celebrated with great fervoir and enthusiasm.

The event was organised by the Purul Youth & Students Organization and sponsored by the Tourism department of Manipur.

Paoki is a traditional plantation festival among the Poumai tribes which is observed every year for three days during the month of May since time immemorial. However, the day of celebration varies from village to village.

Purul village is believed to be the first to plant rice in the region. The village sees the highest footfall of tourists during the festival.

With a rich history, unique culture, varieties of traditional dress codes, fairs and festivals, landscape, place rich in wildlife, and hospitality of the locals, Purul is truly a tourist destination of Manipur.

On the first day, every household prepared tribal delicacies for friends and relatives who arrived in the village for the festival.

Guests were treated lavishly during the festival leaving a lasting impression of the hospitality of the people of Purul.

The second day was marked by various activities including gathering paddy saplings for the day of transplantation.

At night, Naga wrestling competition took place in the courtyard of the village chief where youths from neighboring villages came to wrestle the host village.The wrestling lasted till the dawn of a new day.
