Man-elephant conflicts in Assam have reached alarming proportions. Yet in another incident, a man was trampled to death by wild elephants in Dibrugarh district.
The incident took place at Abhaypur village under Namrup police station in Dibrugarh late last evening.
The deceased has been identified as Nandeswar Gogoi, aged around 48 years.
He is survived by his wife and three children.
Gogoi was returning from Namrup market at around 9 pm when he encountered the marauding jumbos on the road and was unfortunately trampled to death by one of them.
Soon the villagers learned about his death and immediately informed the Forest department.

Villagers, however, claimed that the arrival of forest department officials at the scene was around 12 am.
The elephants reportedly strayed out of the Joypur reserve forest in search of food.
Man-elephant conflicts resulting in human deaths have now become a common occurrence in the area, said locals.
Speaking to the media, the deceased’s brother has requested the Assam government to give the victim’s family compensation and to take the responsibility of educating the children.
Additionally, he urged the government to take the initiative in resolving the issue of human-elephant conflicts.
Days ago a man named Sarakanta was attacked by elephants and suffered severe injuries.
He is currently undergoing treatment at the AMCH in Dibrugarh.
Locals also claimed that even though they had raised the issue with the Forest Department and asked for a long-term solution, the department has allegedly not taken the matter seriously.
