The employee of a business outlet in Guwahati was shot dead in what appears to be an apparent case of mistaken identity, police said.
A five-member group of assailants shot dead Shyam Chandra Sharma, the cashier of Ms Kureshia Steels located in Kumarpara, believing him to be the owner of the shop.
The owner, incidentally, was named Shyam Prasad Sharma.
Eyewitness said five men came and asked for Shyam Sharma. When someone led them to cashier Shyam Chandra Sharma, they shot at him from close range.
Sharma was declared dead on arrival at hospital. The deceased hailed from Rajasthan and stayed in Guwahati alone.
Police say the assailants came with a murder motive but the target might have been the owner Shyam Prasad Sharma.
However, since the cashier and the owner had the same name and surname, the gunmen pumped bullets on the former believing him to be the owner.
Investigation is underway with Guwahati Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar leading the probe.
