Expensive Meal: Man fined Rs 2 Lakh for carrying McDonald’s breakfast on flight

Ever craved for a Mc Donald’s burger and had to pay in lakhs? In an unusual incident, a man with a McDonald’s meal just learned it the hard way. A hefty charge was recently imposed on a tourist for bringing food onto a flight from Bali to Australia; the traveler’s basic meal of a burger and a wrap at McDonald’s cost him Rs 2 lakh.

Every time someone enters the nation, they are informed of the cost of certain items. Additionally, a form detailing items that can raise biosecurity issues is given to every tourist. As a result, the traveller who arrived in Australia with a McDonald’s lunch was unaware that his decision to eat fast food would put him in peril.

The airport’s biosecurity detector dog, Zinta, immediately began sniffing the traveler’s bags when he arrived in Australia from Bali.

Two Egg and Sausage McMuffins and a Ham Croissant were found in the tourist’s luggage because of a dog’s sniffer.

It started, according to a News Corp story, when the guy neglected to tell airport officials about his McDonald’s lunches and gave them “fake and deceptive documentation.” As a result, the man was fined $2,664 for his simple breakfast.

What Does Australia’s Biosecurity Mean?

“All the measures taken to minimise the risk of infectious diseases caused by viruses, bacteria or other micro-organisms entering, emerging, establishing or spreading in Australia, potentially harming the Australian population, our food security and economy,” is how the Department of Health defines biosecurity.

Why is it important for Australia to have strong biosecurity?

Strong biosecurity promotes the economy, protects the environment, supports agriculture, expands markets, decreases production costs, and protects the health and way of life.

What are Australia’s biosecurity and border controls?

Australia has stringent biosecurity measures in place to lessen the possibility of illnesses and pests entering the nation. All visitors must be in compliance with the regulations before entering Australia. Certain foods, plants, and animal products must be declared on your incoming passenger card (IPC). A document known as an IPC identifies and documents a visitor’s arrival in Australia.

You declare your products here for quarantine and customs examination. Visit an inspection site upon arrival if you have declared goods on your IPC. An officer of biosecurity will evaluate them.

You have to put your items in the bins at the terminal before the inspection stations if you don’t wish to declare them. If you transport regulated products without declaring it, you risk fines or legal action.

Your baggage is screened by officers using: luggage screening, x-ray devices, and/or detection dogs.
