Landslides reveal sorry state of National Highways in Dima Hasao

Scores of vehicles have been stuck at various places in Dima Hasao district of Assam on Saturday owing to landslides in many spots.
Most of the vehicles have been stranded reportedly since 4 in the morning as many of the landslides took place in the wee hours today.
With incessant rain still battering the region occasionally, people having a hard time commuting between certain places with road communication snapped.
On top of that most parts of Haflong are experiencing power outages since yesterday morning. The source of the power outage has been attributed to the Jiribam line where one of the towers has been damaged.
Meanwhile, heavy downpour for the last two days has caused severe landslides at several places across the district.
On Friday, Dima Hasao Deputy commissioner Nazreen Ahmed visited the affected site to monitor the situation. She urged the NHAI officials to ensure immediate restoration. Multiple JCBs have been pressed into service to clear the mud and debris.
Ahmed informed that the contract for the maintenance of the roads was terminated due to a lapse on the part of the contractors. She added that the NHAI will be informed to urgently take up maintenance work of the important stretch.
Meanwhile, the District Disaster Management Authority or DDMA has briefed the PWD department on the prevailing situation.
As per latest updates, some of those roads have been cleared making way for the vehicles to pass through.
However, the widespread incidents of landslides have raised serious questions on the condition of highways’ proper maintenance or rather a lack of it in Dima Hasao.
