“Shanti” a short film directed by Vivek Rai of Darjeeling has bagged the “Silver Egg” at the prestigious Kustendof Film and Music Festival 2024 in Drvengrad, Serbia.

The film, directed by Vivek Rai and lensed by Rajiv Ranjan Runtala, unfolds a gripping tale based on Chimmi Angmu Lama’s book “Ek Mukta Munal,” set in the 1920s along the porous Indo-Nepal border.

The story revolves around the love and strength of a mother, portrayed by Shantila Singer Tamang, who confronts dacoits in a daring bid to protect her child.

Notably, the Kustendof Festival has become the new age Mecca for short films, with nominated entries often progressing to tier 1 film festivals like Cannes, Oberhausen, and Claremont-Ferrand.

The festival, founded by acclaimed filmmaker Emir Kusturica and Rasta International under the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia, emphasizes bringing together emerging filmmakers and world-renowned auteurs.

“Shanti” marked a historic moment as the first Indian film to compete at Kustendof. Its screening on the 4th day coincided with India’s 75th Republic Day celebration.
