The after affects of the publication of final draft NRC is beginning to show up in the states which share borders with Assam.

In neighbouring state of Meghalaya, members of the influential Khasi Students’ Union and other pressure groups were seen frisking public transport vehicles in a bid to stop possible influx of foreigners from Assam in the wake of the release of the final draft NRC.

KSU members were seen stopping vehicles just near the Assam-Meghalaya border in Byrnihat in what they call a bid to detect illegal migrants who could be trying to sneak into Meghalaya after their names did not find place in the NRC list in Assam.

Later police personnel reportedly intervened and the KSU members agreed to be with the police team posted at the border area instead of conducting the checking on their own.

Frisking of vehicles has also been reported from Ratacherra in East Jaintia Hills bordering Assam.

Most of the northeastern states sharing border with Assam are on the alert after over 40 lakh people did not figure in the final draft NRC released yesterday.

Despite repeated assurance from the Centre and the Assam government that no action will be taken against those who have missed out, the neighboring states of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Meghalaya seem to be in no mood of taking any chance.
