Meghalaya: Barring of teachers from politics, KHADC CEM meets education minister Rymbui

Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Titostarwell Chyne, met Education Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui seeking clarification on the notification issued by the Education Department barring teachers from involvement in political parties and local bodies.

Chyne stated that the purpose of the visit was to clarify the term “local bodies” since it could also include holding positions like village headman at the community level. He informed that the Education Minister assured to issue a fresh notification to clarify that the term “local bodies” is confined to the District Council and Municipal alone and that there is no bar for teachers to become leaders in the local durbars.

The Education Minister reiterated that politics is not a part-time job for the teachers to take up. He further stated that if one wants to involve themselves in politics, they have to give up their teaching career.

This can affect the education of the students since holding a position in the political office requires a full-time commitment, Rymbui added.
