Kerala floods: Situation grim despite receding water levels; Thousands from Northeast left stranded

Despite receding water levels, the flood-hit state of Kerala remains on the edge. Hundreds from the region are still stranded in the state, seeking help from their respective state governments.

Over 50 labourers from Assam have taken shelter in the the University of Fisheries and Ocean studies.

Left with no money, they now bank on government help to ensure that they return home safely.

Meanwhile, four women from Assam who had been stranded without money at Chengalur in Alappuzha district have been contacted by government authorities in Assam.

It may be mentioned that Rishikesh Goswami, the press secretary to Assam Chief Minister played a prominent role in contacting the stranded women and are being prepared to be brought back home.

Hundreds of others from the Northeast still remain stranded in flood hit Kerala waiting for help.

Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced today that the UAE has offered Rs 700 crore for flood relief in the state.

The state cabinet has suggested Governor P Sathasivam to hold a special assembly session on August 30 to discuss post-flood discussion over relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction of Kerala.

Earlier today, the state government scheduled for an all-party meeting at 4 pm this evening.

Northeast too is making efforts to help the victims of the flood hit state. People from Nagaland and Shillong are organizing various events to extend relief aid to the flood hit people.
