Kangpokpi: Protestors demand “solution first, peace next”

Thousands took to the streets of Kangpokpi in Manipur and staged a sit-in protest to drive home its stance of “Solution first, Peace next”.

The protest was held today at Keithelmanbi Military Colony in Champhai Sub Division of Kangpokpi district.

The protestors also demanded the solution should be based on the tripartite political talks of the United People’s Front (UPF) and the Kuki National Organization (KNO) with the Government of India and the Government of Manipur.

They also clearly voiced their stance that they would not entertain any peace process initiated by the Government without first coming up with a solution.

Speaking to North East Live, the Spokesperson of the Committee on Tribals Unity, Sadar Hills said “We are not against peace as we are always a peace-loving community, but, we want the Government to first address our problems and then talk about peace.
We always accept peace but before it is talked about, we first want the centre Government to first address our problems and give us a solution”.

Another member of the Committee on Tribals Unity, Sadar Hills while elucidating clearly about the solution, said that the solution they want should be based on the “Political Dialogue” between the UPF and KNO and the Governments.

She also highlighted the various issues faced by the internally displaced persons at various relief camps set up in the Kangpokpi district.

She said that there is a shortage of medical facilities for internally displaced persons.

A similar sit-in protest will be held tomorrow at Saparmeina to draw the immediate attention of the Central Government to address the problems of the people.
