Justice Ranjan Gogoi appointed next Chief Justice of India, to assume office on October 3

Justice Ranjan Gogoi, the senior most Judge in the Supreme Court after Chief Justice Dipak Misra, was appointed as the next Chief Justice of India.

President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the next Chief Justice of India and will assume the office of Chief Justice on October 3rd after the retirement of the current Chief Justice, Justice Dipak Misra.

The warrant of appointment comes in less than 10 days after incumbent Chief Justice Dipak Misra recommended Justice Ranjan Gogoi his successor.

As the 46th Chief Justice of India, Justice Gogoi will have a tenure of about 13 months, till November 17, 2019.

Justice Ranjan Gogoi, has come a long way from Dibrugarh in Assam to reach the top position of judiciary – the first person from the Northeast to do so.

Born on 18 November 1954, Gogoi did his schooling in Don Bosco School Dibrugarh before studying history in Delhi University’s St Stephen’s College.

He joined the Bar in 1978 and practised mainly in the Gauhati High Court. He was appointed as permanent judge of the Gauhati High Court on February 28, 2001.

He was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court on September 9, 2010 and appointed its Chief Justice in February 2011. Gogoi was elevated to the Supreme Court on April 23, 2012.

Son of former Assam Chief Minister Keshab Chandra Gogoi, he was enrolled as an advocate in 1978. He practised in the Gauhati High Court on constitutional, taxation and company matters.
