Jiribam ambush: 2 arrested for attack on security forces ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s visit

An ambush on security forces was reported in Manipur just hours before Congress leader and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi’s visit to violence-hit Jiribam in Manipur early this morning.

Two men involved in the ambush has been apprehended by the security forces.

Armed miscreants opened fired on security forces stationed at Gularthal area of Manipur’s Jiribam district. A fire tender and 2 police vehicles were damaged in the attack. No security personnel have been hurt in the attack, security officials said.

According to inputs, the clash broke out after a team of security personnel traveling in their bulletproof vehicles were attacked by armed miscreants. The security personnel retaliated, ensuing in a heavy gunfight. The exchange of fire that started at around 3:30 am continued till 7 am.

The incident spot is just 10 kms from where Rahul Gandhi is to meet the violence-hit people in Jiribam.

Rahul Gandhi is on a day-long visit to Manipur. He is meeting displaced people in relief camps in Fulertal in Lakhipur in Assam bordering Manipur, in Tuibong in Churachandpur and in Moirang in Manipur.

The Leader of Opposition is also scheduled to meet Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey at the Governor’s House today at around 6 pm before leaving for Lucknow on his way back to New Delhi.
