JE cases detected in Arunachal’s Namsai, district administration bans pig rearing

The Arunachal government has completely banned rearing of pigs in Namsai district with immediate effect in the wake of an alarming spike in cases of Japanese encephalitis in the district.

As per the prohibitory order issued by Namsai district magistrate CR Khampa, “Pig is the main intermediate host of the JE virus, and the rearing of pigs needs to be regulated in densely populated areas like Namsai township.”

“As per the guidelines, livestock farming should be done away from human habitats as it causes public nuisance in terms of foul smell and unhygienic environment,” the order read.

The order further said that the pigs reared as on date should be disposed of within 15 days from the date of the order, which was issued on Monday.

The order mentioned that Japanese encephalitis cases had been detected in the Chowkham area of the district on September 16.

“The patient has been referred to outside the district for treatment. We have issued the order banning rearing of pigs to stop further spread of JE cases in the district,” he added.
