Jailed AssamMLA and Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi, granted parole for two days by an NIA court, met his ailing mother in Jorhat on Saturday.
After being granted parole on Friday afternoon, Gogoi left Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment for various ailments. He spent the night at his rented residence in Guwahati with his wife and son.
An emotional Gogoi speaking to mediapersons said, “My mother was waiting for me. She is ailing and needs to be operated soon. She wanted to meet me first and only then she would go for further treatment. I will talk to the doctors and will have a discussion about when can she be operated on. My son also wanted to accompany me but I could not bring him along with me as I was brought in police security”.
“With folded hands, I thank the people of Sivasagar. You have created history by electing me when I am in jail. I hope I can be free soon and serve you. I want the youth to work to revive our economy and help me to eradicate all the problems faced by our people. Only then struggles of my mother and every other mother will be worth of. I have never dreamt of being an MLA and neither thinks of myself as an MLA. I will definitely try my best for the development of my people. I swear to my mother that people will never find me involved in any corruption or any other illegal activities. I will only work for the people of Assam and that’s a promise,” said the Sibsagar MLA who scripted history by becoming the first jailed leader in Assam to win an assembly election.
” I am back home after 1 and a half years and I just want to spend some time with my mother and eat cooked food by her which I missed when I was in jail. Next time, whenever I get bail or parole I will meet the people of Sivasagar and will hear all their problems and will act on them,” he added.
The court allowed Akhil Gogoi to visit only his ailing mother in Jorhat and his son in Guwahati but forbade him from meeting the people of his constituency due to the prevailing pandemic situation.
Gogoi was arrested on December 12, 2019, from Jorhat at the peak of the anti-CAA protests in view of the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
