JAC Formed to Push for Tribal Status for Sikkim and Darjeeling’s left-out Communities

In a significant development, a Joint Action Committee (JAC) was formed on Sunday to advocate for tribal status for 12 left-out communities from Sikkim and 11 from Darjeeling. The committee comprises nine members, with five representing Sikkim and four from Darjeeling.

The committee was formed after Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang chaired a crucial coordination meeting in Siliguri today, which was attended by Darjeeling MP Raju Bista, MLA Niraj Zimba, as well as Sikkim MPs, MLAs, and cabinet ministers.

The meeting’s purpose was to push for the long-standing demand to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the left-out communities.

This renewed effort follows the rejection of a previous request by the Registrar General of India. Leaders at the meeting expressed hope that their latest push would finally bring the desired outcome, securing constitutional recognition and the associated social and economic benefits for these communities.

The meeting, attended by Rajya Sabha MP DT Lepcha and Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba, is seen as a vital step in addressing the communities’ concerns. Leaders believe that the collective effort will help achieve long-overdue tribal status for these marginalized groups.
