At least 117 cases of dog bites have been reported in Itanagar in just a week causing serious concern among people about rabies cases (An infection in humans occurs mostly through dog bites or scratches).

The Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) Deputy Commissioner’s office said that the surge in cases has been attributed to the large number of unvaccinated stray dogs in the region.

Following the report of the District Medical Officer, Itanagar about rising incidents of dog bites, the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) Deputy Commissioner Shweta Nagarkoti Mehta has issued a notice to prevent further escalation.

Urging all pet owners to make sure their dogs are vaccinated and to safely confine any aggressive animals or dogs within 15 days, the DC warned if the stated directive is not followed, the pets will be evicted.

Pet owners have also been asked to ensure that their pets are always on a leash when outside the home and should not be allowed to roam freely in public places.

They have been asked to alert the senior municipal veterinary officer (IMC) or any government veterinary officer right away if their pet exhibits any signs of rabies.

The district administration has asked the Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) to work with the Arunachal Dog and Cat Rescue NGO, Lekhi to catch stray dogs.

Further preventive actions, such as vaccinating stray dogs against rabies, have been assigned to the veterinary officers of IMC and Itanagar, the Banderdewa circle officer, and the Extra Assistant Commissioners (EACs) of Itanagar and Naharlagun.
