The first phase, a 44.96 km stretch from Sevoke to Rangpo, is already under construction and is slated for completion by December 2026

The Indian Railways has achieved a significant milestone by completing the Final Location Survey (FLS) for the proposed Rangpo-Gangtok railway line in Sikkim.

The 34.7 km stretch, part of the Sevoke-Gangtok rail link project, aims to enhance regional connectivity and boost economic growth. The survey report has been submitted to the Railway Board for approval.

Once approved, tenders will be floated, and construction will commence under the project’s second phase. The first phase, a 44.96 km stretch from Sevoke to Rangpo, is already under construction and is slated for completion by December 2026. This section features 14 tunnels, 13 bridges, and five stations, with over 92% of its route involving tunnels. Advanced engineering techniques are being used to ensure stability and enable train speeds of up to 100 kmph.

Initially sanctioned in 2008-09, the Sevoke-Gangtok rail link faced delays due to environmental concerns, as the route passes through ecologically sensitive areas. These challenges postponed the project’s completion to 2026. Despite these hurdles, the Indian Railways remains committed to minimizing environmental impacts through sustainable practices.

The completion of this rail link is expected to transform Sikkim’s connectivity, providing a vital boost to tourism, trade, and freight services. Currently, Sikkim is the only Northeastern state without direct rail connectivity, making the project highly anticipated by locals and businesses.

Authorities are optimistic about swift approval for the Rangpo-Gangtok stretch, ensuring construction begins soon. Once operational, the Sevoke-Gangtok rail link will mark a new era for Sikkim, strengthening its integration with the rest of the country and driving regional development.
