In a proud moment for the northeast, Indian-American Samir Banerjee with roots in Assam has won the Wimbledon Junior Men’s title on Sunday defeating United States’ Victor Lilov.
Banerjee defeated Lilov 7-5, 6-3 in the final. The 17-year-old dropped just three sets in the six matches at the All England Club.
Earlier, Banerjee stormed into the junior men’s final Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg of France.
The people of Northeast and Assam in particular have more than one reason to celebrate this victory.
Interestingly, the Tennis sensation’s grandfather Hironmoy Banerjee was a general manager with Oil India Limited based at Duliajan in the eighties.
Kunal Banerjee, Samir’s father who had his early education in Duliajan later migrated to the United States
