In Assam, the COVID-19 vaccination drive was successfully launched at 65 session sites across 33 districts on Saturday. Ten senior doctors of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) have been administered the Covishield vaccine.

State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was present at GMCH during the launch of the vaccination campaign.

Speaking to mediapersons the health minister said, “This is a day of pride for the country. Both the vaccines that we have taken are from India. We have taken the lead over developed nations of the world on how humanity can be served. Today we have shown, India will always be ahead in the service of humanity. The vaccination drive through locally-made vaccines has proved the nation’s culture and determination towards serving the people of the world. This is a great and pious moment for us.”

Clearing doubts on fake news regarding the vaccine, Sarma said that the government faced a similar situation during their fight against Coronavirus.

“They almost straitjacketed us to the level of defeating us through fake news. Today, the most prominent physicians of Assam have come forward to take the vaccine and have proven that such news has no base or reality. This is a safe vaccine and is manufactured to serve humanity,” Sarma said.

Sarma further stated that for now around 3 lakh people will be vaccinated in the first stage — 1,90,000 health workers and one lakh police, fire service and cleaning staff. In the next stage people over 50 years of age will be vaccinated.
